Jackson County Christmas Charities (CC) has been a part of Scottsboro and Jackson County for over 25 years.
The board consists of 25 members and 6 representatives from the outlying charity centers.
CC was formed to provide needy families with toys, clothing, foods and other essentials.
CC only serves children, elderly (60 years and older) and the disabled. Children have to be 18 years and younger to be served and be attending school.
The CC office is located in the Department of Human Resourses (DHR) building in Scottsboro and is where all Scottsboro families are served.
The outlying charity centers are also run by volunteers in that particular community. Communities served are:
Bridgeport
Pisgah
Woodville
Dutton
Section
Stevenson
The process to determine who CC serves each year is very simple. We set a date in September for prospects to complete an application and then a make-up date is scheduled in October. This is advertised at local businesses, grocery stores as well as on all local media outlets. After the applications are collected, the screening committee will go through them to make sure that all requirements are met including the 2006 Poverty Guidelines. Applicants are automatically approved if they are receiving any government assistance. All of the approved applicants will go to the CC office volunteers who will put all of their information into our computer. Then they are ready to be adopted by the public, schools, clubs, businesses and industry.
Volunteers man the CC office Monday – Friday from 8 to 4:30 pm from November through the middle of December.
Our goal is to get all families adopted. Those that do not get adopted are served through the center with monetary donations, toys and other donated items from various resources.
There are several businesses and groups that have toy and food drives that contribute to CC and these are very much appreciated.
We also purchase food from the food bank in Huntsville. We have Board members that drive to Huntsville to pick up food in November and then “man” the food trailer that is parked at DHR. Local schools also have food drives for CC. This food goes to those families that are not adopted and are served by their appropriate charity center.
There are over 900 families needing to be served in Scottsboro and Jackson County – it takes a lot of individuals, groups, businesses and industry to make sure that all of these children, elderly and disabled people experience a Merry Christmas.
Please consider being a part of making someone’s Christmas a wonderful one this year!
